Day 1: Arrival Kigali
On arrival at Kigali airport, you will be met by a Msafiri Tours representative and you will transfer to your hotel for your overnight stay at Kigali Serena Hotel or Hotel Chez Lando Meal plan D.
Day 2: Kigali to Parc des Volcans
After breakfast and a briefing by your Msafiri Tours guide, you will head out on a city tour of Kigali, including a visit to the Genocide Memorial site, a grim reminder of the senseless massacre of many innocents’ lives that took place in 1994. At the memorial, you will learn about Rwanda’s history from pre-colonial times to the 1994 genocide and how Rwanda has dealt with its recent past.
You will continue your tour and see the new developments in Rwanda. The recovery has been incredible, a testament to humankind’s resilience. After enjoying lunch at a restaurant in Kigali, you will drive to Musanze (formerly called Ruhengeri) in the northwestern part of Rwanda, the main base town for gorilla trekking. The drive is through beautiful rolling hills passing coffee, tea and banana plantations and is approximately a 2.5 hour drive from Kigali. Dinner and overnight stay will be at Gorilla Nest Lodge, Mountains Gorilla View Lodge, Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge or Kinigi Guest House (Full Board).
Day 3: Parc des Volcans – Kigali
After breakfast, you will transfer by road and report to the park for gorilla trekking formalities and briefing by the Volcanoes National Park’s guides. The gorilla group that you will visit will depend on the assignment of travelers to the seven habituated guerilla groups.
You will be assigned to a specific group of gorillas. Groups of trekkers will have a maximum of 8 visitors per gorilla family. Your trek will vary in length depending on which gorilla group you have been assigned to and will commence at about 7,000 feet of altitude in the upper terraced slopes of the volcano. Soon you will enter the forest of bamboo and thick undergrowth. Along the paths, the walking is steep but not overly strenuous.
Nothing can prepare you for the feeling of being up-close and personal with a fully grown silverback gorilla that is up to three times as bulky as the average man, yet remarkably peaceful and tolerant of human visitors. There are no words to describe the thrill of recognition attached to staring deep into the liquid brown eyes of these gentle giants.
After locating your assigned gorilla group, you will spend no more than one hour in their company before retracing your steps back down the volcano slopes. Lunch will be at the lodge before you return to Kigali for an overnight stay Kigali Serena Hotel or Hotel Chez Lando Meal plan B, L & D.
