Travel money in Uganda
Our clients and visitors often ask us how much money they should take with them on a trip to Uganda. The answer is as long as a piece of string, to be honest, but somewhere in the range US$50 to US$100 per person per day, backed up by credit or debit cards, works for most people.
Generally speaking hard currencies are widely accepted in most locations, with USD, EUR and GBP being most widely recognised. We recommend carrying most of your cash in these currencies which you should bring from your home country. You can then change up small amounts into the local Uganda shillings currency for use in local shops and with street vendors.
Outside Kampala and other major towns in Uganda, cash machines or banking facilities may not be widely available. You can change money at the airport or at the hotels and lodges in Kampala most of whom will be able to provide change and, in some cases, cash advances on credit and debit cards. Payment by card is widely available now in Uganda. In all cases you should expect to pay a premium for banking services, either through fees or disadvantageous exchange rates.
